Discard One Teen Patti (Best of Four): Complete Guide
Discard One, also known as Best of Four, is a widely loved variant where every player receives four cards instead of three. You then discard one to form your final three-card hand. This simple rule change gives you much more control over your hand and creates a dramatically different strategic landscape.
How It Works
All core mechanics follow classic Teen Patti. Players post the boot, betting uses blind and seen rules, and side show and show follow standard hand rankings. The unique step is that after receiving four cards, you select which single card to discard, keeping your best three-card combination.
The Discard Decision
The most important skill in this variant is choosing which card to discard. When you see your four cards, evaluate all four possible three-card combinations and pick the strongest. Beginners often discard randomly or only look at one possible combination. A careless discard can turn a potential sequence into a weak high card.
For example, if you hold 5-6-7-K, you can discard the King to keep 5-6-7 as a sequence. If you hold 5-5-9-Q, discard the 9 or Q to keep the pair of 5s with the better kicker. Always run through all four combinations before deciding.
Strategy Adjustments
Because everyone gets four cards, strong hands appear much more frequently. The standard for a "good hand" rises. A pair that wins often in classic Teen Patti may not be strong enough here. You need sequences, colors, or better to confidently bet large.
Bluffing is less effective because opponents call more readily, knowing everyone had four cards to work with. Save bluffs for heads-up play. Side show decisions also shift: your opponent chose their best three out of four, so their hand is likely above-average compared to classic Teen Patti.
House Rule Timing
Some versions require you to discard before any betting begins. Others let you discard after the first betting round. Confirm this rule before starting. Some rooms combine discard one with jokers, making strong hands even more common.
Pot Odds
Because average hand strength is higher, you need a better hand to justify calling large raises. Do not overvalue a simple pair. In Best of Four, pairs are relatively common and often beaten by sequences and colors. Adjust your calling standards upward accordingly.
Discard One Teen Patti is excellent for players who want more action and greater control over their hand. Mastering the discard choice is the core skill. Practice on free tables first until you can quickly evaluate all four-card combinations and pick the optimal discard. With experience, Best of Four becomes one of the most satisfying Teen Patti variants.
